As of version 1.6.5, LyX includes a Tufte-handout layout and example file.

1. Tufte-handout

The tufte-handout class provides nice-looking handouts with some typographic eye candy. Here are basic layouts and example files for LyX 1.5 and LyX 1.6. The LyX 1.6 file uses the new possibility of creating custom insets and thus further reduces the need of ERT.

Note: tufte-layout depends on many other packages, and if those other packages change, you sometimes get LaTeX errors. If you face such an error, consulting the tufte-handout webpage and the newsgroup archive often helps – these errors are usually fixed rather quickly.
