1.  What is this?

These example letters illustrates how you can create e.g. business-like letter using the document class Letter (Koma Script v.2).

2.  Example by Christian (American style?)

This example letter is based on work by Rich Shepard, who did a business letter a'la American style.

2.1  Usage

Installation should be as simple as downloading the template and using that to create a new letter. You probably will want to create your own letterhead as an image, and possibly a scanned image with your signature.

Instructions for how to use it can be found in the example letter, see the list of files below.

Writing letters with LyX

I have played for a long time with word processors to write letters both private and professional. When I switched from Windows to Linux, I tried to improve my way of doing things. I started experimenting with Latex but I quickly abandoned for LyX. After all, I no longer program in assembly language but C or P...something. This does not prevent me from always being able to use it when necessary. For routine tasks, it is no longer appropriate. Lyx plays the same role as a compiler and if you want to put your hands in the sludge (Latex), you can! All that to say that it is now Lyx which manages everything that I write a more or less official. I use it from letters to reports, appendices and other paperwork required by the administration. Having failed to find a model that suits me to write letters according to the french standard (existing models were either too old and unsuitable as Class Lettre from D. Mégevand or too simplistic as the class lettreb), I modified the settings in a parameter file from a Nordic country which was using class KomaScript-Letter-2 to make them compatible with French postal standards (NF = Norme Française). This class KomaScript-Letter-2, which is of German origin, has the great advantage of being provided with standard Lyx and sufficiently flexible for settings.

Here is an overview of models, which use A4 format for both the private letter and for the professional letter:

There are fold marks for envelopes to French standards (reference DL format 110x220, with window of 45 * 100, which contains an A4 folded in three). The logo used in the professional courier is the eps format. The file "modele.lyx" is a version that express all the possibilities of setting for a private letter. You need the files "NF.lco" and "ksl2nf.lyx" or "modele.lyx" for a private letter and you need the files "NFpro.lco" and "ksl2pro.lyx" for a professional letter. The file "prologo.eps" represents an open box and will be advantageously replaced by your own logo ;-)
