1.  Other FAQs

You may also want to look at this FAQ [www.pmichaud.com]. The questions there are a bit more for advanced users.

§2.  General questions

§Q: What is this place?

This "place" is a wiki-wiki site for the "LyX-community", i.e. users and developers of LyX. It is a place where we can all add information such as tips and techniques for working with LyX.

§Q: What is the purpose of this site?

The purpose of this site is to let users of LyX share useful information such as Frequently Asked Questions, example documents etc.

§Q: Should I use this site instead of the LyX users' mailing list?

No. The LyX users' list and this site complement each other. A good way to work to ask questions on the users' list, and then later on document the answers on this site. See LyX.Internet Resources for more details about the users' list.

§Q: How does this site differ from www.lyx.org and Herbert's Tips&Tricks?

Everybody can modify the contents of this site, including editing pages and uploading files. For instance, in order to edit this page, just click here.

§Q: What is a wiki, a wiki-wiki or a wiki-wiki site?

This is a wiki-wiki site, which means that everybody can contribute to its contents - if a page has an edit-link, just click on it!
For more information, see WikiWikiWeb. For even more information and some history, see Wikipedia:Wiki [www.wikipedia.org].

§Q: Is there a difference between Wiki and Wiki-Wiki

No, not really1... see Wikipedia:Wiki.

§Q: What do you mean contribute?

That you, users and developers of LyX, are welcome to add your own material related to LyX.

§Q: How do I find my way around this site?

For an overview of how to find your way around, see navigation.

§Q: I read something on a page (e.g. ReasonsToUseLyXInsteadOfLatex) that I don't agree with, what can I do?

Just edit the page and make your voice heard... (It's probably a good idea to add some kind of signature)

Q:§How can I list pages of a specific group?

Go to the search form at the top of this page and write the name of the group followed by a slash, e.g. Site/. Then click on the Search button.

Q:§How can I get a list of pages in the current group?

See the previous question. Usually you can click on the Search button at once, since search form typically already contains the name of the current group followed by a slash.

Q:§ How can I get a list of all pages on this site?

Put either '/' or nothing in the search form at the top of this page, and then click the Search button.

§Q:What do I do if I see something that looks wrong at this site?

This is a wiki-wiki, so you can fix it yourself. If you are unsure about what to do, send a mail to the Documentation Team list. /Christian

§Q: Who do I contact when I have a question/problem/issue with this site?

Send a mail to the Documentation Team list.

§Q: What about Copyrights for material on this site?

See Copyrights.

§Q: How can I control (e.g. disallow) wether Google indexes a page?

See controlling web robots, the short answer is to add the markup (:robots noindex, nofollow:) to such a page.

3.  Questions about editing pages

§Q How do I edit a page?

You can click on the link labelled Edit at the top/right part of the page, or at the bottom/left of the page. Yet another alternative is to add ?action=edit to the URL.

§Q: How do I create a new page?

There are several ways. One way is to create link to the new page, and then click on the question mark at the end of the link (ex:ANewPage?). Another way is to manually type in the URI of the new page (ex: http://wiki.lyx.org/pmwiki.php/Site/ANewPage) and then click on the question mark after the text Describe ANewPage. A third way is to manually type in the URI of the new page and append ?action=edit (ex:http://wiki.lyx.org/pmwiki.php/Playground/ANewPage?action=edit).

§Q: Where can I practice editing?

Go to the playground and create your own sandbox to play in, or use the standard WikiSandbox.

§Q: When I press Preview, the URI changes but nothing else happens, why?

When you press Preview, a new page is shown with the wiki markup at the top, followed by a preview of the page. If you don't see the preview, you may simply have to scroll down a bit using page down or space. (The focus, in Opera at least, has shifted out of the form, so you can scroll using the keyboard at once).

§Q: How can I insert a TAB? Pressing TAB only shifts the focus in my browser?

One solution is to open an editor (Emacs, Notepad), where you insert a TAB-character. Then select and copy this TAB-character, change back to the browser where you can finally use paste to insert the TAB-character into the edit form. Another solution is to use the pmwiki-mode for Emacs, that allows you to open, edit and save wiki pages just like any other piece of text.

§4.  Questions related to uploading files

§Q: How do I upload a file?

See about uploading.

§Q: Why is there a limitation on how large files I can upload?

At the moment the limit seems to be 512kB, because [www.pmichaud.com]:

There are two other factors involved that affect upload file sizes. In Apache 2.0, there is a LimitRequestBody directive that controls the maximum size of anything that is posted (including file uploads). Apache has this defaulted to unlimited size. However, some Linux distributions including Red Hat limit postings to 512K so this may need to be changed or increased.
Remember that if necessary, you can split up the files into several archives, or contact the Documentation Team list for help in uploading big files.

§Q: How can I make a link to an uploaded file?

Use the prefix uploads:<path>/<file>=], see about uploading.

§Q: How can I make an uploads:-link appear as something else?

Write something like this: [[link text -> uploads:<path>/<file>]]

§Q: How can I rename an uploaded file?

Use the file manager, see about uploading

§Q: How can I delete an uploaded file?

Use the file manager, see about uploading

5.  Miscellaneous questions

§Q: What special information pages are there on this site?

<ThisGroup>.RecentChanges, Field.AllRecentChanges, <ThisGroup>.RecentUploads and maybe more?

§Q: Why is there no link to this site from www.lyx.org? It could be referred to as LyX community site (or something like that)

There is a link at http://www.lyx.org/internet, but it could be better

§Q: Why are there lots of links (selflink) looking like §?

The § indicates the existance of an anchor at that place, and the § is also a link to that anchor. The anchor is useful to specify a specific place on a page (e.g. a specific question), and since the § is a link you could do something like "copy link address" in your browser to copy the URI of the §.
