Counting the words in a LyX document

With LyX >= 1.4, you can easily count words with Tools→Word count.

With LyX 2.0.0, you can count words using Tools→Statistics....

However, up to 1.3, there were no Menu topic and no LyxFunctions for word count yet. The following lists some workarounds. (Also check out the usenet thread: [1]

• Run the spellchecker (F7). After completing, it shows the number of checked words.
• Export to ASCII text (File>Export>Text or M-x file-export text) and run the wc shell command on it (Unix).
• Use the word-count function from the PyClient.
