How to set up LyX under Windows to use it for Armenian

Installation

1. Install LyX for Windows
2. In the Windows installer don't forget to select to install the spell checker for "հայերեն".
3. Install fonts to Windows that contain the Armenian script. A good choice are the Arian AMU fonts and the DejaVu fonts.

Testing the Installation

1. Run LyX and press Ctrl+N to open a new document. Write a few words in English, and press Ctrl+R.
   A PDF viewer program should be opened; check that it displays the text correctly.
   
2. Open another document and call the menu Document → Settings.
   1. Select there in the Language section "Armenian"
   2. Select there in the Fonts section e.g. the font "Arian AMU Serif" as roman, "Arian AMU" as sans-serif and as "Arian AMU Mono" as typewriter font.
   3. Press OK to close the document settings and type in a few words. In the document settings Press Ctrl+R and check the output.

Possible problems

• Most probably your will get the error
  Package polyglossia Error: The current roman font does not contain the Armenian script!
  This is because the creators of Armenian fonts did not take about LaTeX and therefore did not include a header that tells LaTeX that this font contains Armenian. There are 2 ways of handle this:
  • You can ignore this error and press at the bottom of the error dialog Show output anyway.
  • You can declare that the fonts contain Armenian. This is done by adding in the LaTeX preamble in the document settings these lines
    \newfontfamily{\armenianfont}{DejaVu Serif}
    \newfontfamily{\armeniansansfont}{DejaVu Sans}
    \newfontfamily{\armenianfonttt}{DejaVu Sans Mono}
    \newfontfamily{\armenianmathfont}{DejaVu Math TeX Gyre}
    These lines are the declaration for the DejaVu fonts. If you use other fonts, replace the DejaVu font names by the ones you are using.
• LyX allows you to make text bold, italic typewriter etc. but the output will not change. The reason is that the font you have chosen does not support them. Therefore choose a font family that offers also bold and italic, like e.g. the Arian AMU fonts.
• If you do not see Armenian characters in LyX, check in the LyX preferences that the screen fonts support Armenian.
